As your child reads–or as you read to your child–be sure to ask some questions along the way:
A. Setting
- Where does the story take place?
- What is the place like?
- Is there anything I can tell from the setting, even though it does not say it directly? For example: I know it is winter if there is snow on the ground.
- Can you tell when the story took place? How did you know?
B. Characters
- Who are the main characters?
- Do I like or dislike them? Why?
- Who is the most important character in the story? Why?
- Do any of the characters change in the story how?
- Does a character do things that are good or bad? What kind of things?
C. Plot
- What are the main things that have happened in the story
- Can you guess what is going to happen next? What clues can I use?
- What would I have done differently if I had been one of the characters?
D. Mood
- How did I feel while reading this story? Why did I fell that way?
- What was the most exciting thing that happened?
- What was the funniest or saddest or strangest thing that happened?
- What do I remember most about this story?
